Great Canadian Skootamatta Ice Contest Official Date
Apr 28, 2014
A Paul's POP
Hi All,
My apologies for being out of contact for the last few days. My computer died and I could not access my e-mail contacts. I wanted to give a running account of ice conditions but couldn’t. Joel posted some pictures on our Facebook page. Check those out. I have an official Great Canadian Skootamatta Ice Contest date for our pool. My criteria was the main part of the lake between Oborne Point and Bible Island. There was significant ice coverage when I last looked on Saturday evening the 26th. And it was fully open when I looked on Sunday the 27th. So, my official date for the contest is the 27th. There was still ice toward the Narrows and my bay is still covered. I would assume other bays still have ice but it won’t be long before they open up. There were five people who selected that date. Bragging rights go to Karen Stacey, Dean Salmond, Lynn Oborne, Ron Nowell and Sheila Percival. First, Second and Third place prizes will be awarded at the AGM by a draw from the hat. Congratulations to all. And thank you everyone for getting involved in this contest. There were 98 guesses and another five that came in after the deadline. That was an amazing response for something that just popped up out of the blue.
If you are wondering about water levels this year after all the flooding that happened around here I can give you an update about that. I used the PLGD Ocular Observation method which has been a very accurate tool over the years. PLGD of course stands for “Paul looks at Gail’s Dock”. Quinte Conservation calls me each year to calibrate their measuring devices. Well, maybe not, but it is a good story. Gail’s dock is usually 4 – 8 inches above water level when the ice goes out. It is at about 4 inches this year. That’s the high end but pretty normal.
The weekends are already getting busier around here. Cottage season would seem to have started.
