Log Replacement Update

Jan 10, 2017

Over the summer, many expressed concern about the water levels at Skootamatta Lake. The SDRA Board has been in regular contact with Quinte Conservation throughout the summer and fall in order to stay informed about the process and timeline.

Logs were removed from the dam following Thanksgiving weekend. This had a minimal effect on the water levels, which were already quite low due to a very dry season. In addition, there was some log replacement that needed to be done, and this was completed in December by the MNR.

Joel Arthurs, an SDRA board member, has been in contact with the MNR to follow the process closely, and the most recent response explained that the work is complete, but there is still some site cleanup to finish in the spring. Additionally, the logs will need to be jacked in order to seal them. Because the logs are new, it will take some time for the warping to come out of them, and so there is some leakage at the moment, and that is typical and expected in a log replacement project.

We have asked if someone from the MNR would be willing and able to come to our AGM to give us a more detailed report about the log replacement project and what to expect, and are awaiting a reply.
