Ecologically Sound Program to reduce Mosquitos & Blackflies

June 13, 2016 at 10:52 PM

The city of Ottawa recently orchestrated a non-chemical, ecologically sound program to reduce mosquito and blackfly population in the Kanata North area. As a good Canadian, I was very critical of this initiative - saying things like "come on people...this is Canada! Just accept our little friends as part of the deal".

Well the results here are amazing. The program reduces populations by 80 to 90 percent...we back onto a beaver pond and where we could not sit on our deck a year ago, we now happily eat dinner and watch the sun setting with NO harassment whatsoever. I am happy to continue to pay $20 per year for this great change. May and June have been like September here.

I contacted the company that does the service and they do this for cottage communities ...Mont Trembant is a big client for example. Would there be interested in looking into this for Skootamatta or a larger area? It would really improve May through July based on what we have experienced here. It might even help the tourism trade in the area.

Because we are fewer people over a large area the costs would be hundreds of dollars a year...probably...but it might be good to get some pricing.

Sign me up. Skoot is notoriously known for an insane amount of mosquitos.

Hey Martin,

Do you mind providing a link to what Ottawa had done/ the methodology they used?

Thanks

Hello again Martin,

Please ignore the first reply. I have found the information. I would be happy to discuss this at the AGM if you will be attending.

Thanks

CHEMICAL OR NOT THIS KIND OF INTERFERENCE IN NATURE IS ABSOLUTELY APPALLING. I AM WATCHING THIS CLOSELY AND WILL BE FIGHTING AGAINST ANY ATTEMPT TO HAMPER NATURES BALANCING ACT. THIS TYPE OF INTERFERENCE CAN LEAD TO OTHER UNFORESEEN DISASTERS. WHAT ABOUT ALL THE NATURAL INSECTS AND BIRDS THAT RELY ON THIS FOOD SOURCE? PLESASE DO YOUR RESEARCH ON 'DDT' "THEY" ALSO TOLD PEOPLE HERE IT WAS GOOD FOR THEM. THEY SPRAYED IT FROM ABOVE AND IT TURNED OUT TO BE ONE OF THE WORST NERO TOXINS IN THE WORLD AND WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR KILLING MANY PEOPLE, INSECTS AND ANIMALS. PLEASE DO RESEARCH AND THINK BEFORE YOU BACK SOMETHING LIKE THIS. DON'T LEAVE AN ECOLOGICAL DISASTER FOR OUR CHILDREN.
